Requirements of the Course

1.      Class attendance and participation. Attendance and punctuality will affect your grade. In this class, late is marked as absent [if the professor is late even for a second, the class is suspended]. Number of allowable absences is 9 hours (Handbook, p. 16).  Participation means active involvement in class or group discussions and in other class activities. It means that students are expected to be prepared for every class by (1) being ready to summarize and identify the major issues or themes in the assigned readings, and (2) bringing at least 2 written questions or comments for each of the assigned readings [you may be asked to read them aloud in class].
2.      Quiz or short paper. There will be always a short quiz of 5-7 minutes every Monday. Sometimes submission of a short paper—academic or reflection— will take the place of a quiz. There is no "make up" chance for a missed quiz. There will be 16 quizzes/short papers at the maximum. The lowest of these will not be counted just in case a student out of necessity will miss a quiz.
3.      Synoptics Notebook. Every student is expected to read the whole Gospels of Matthew (28 chapters) and Mark (16 chapters) and record in a notebook, chapter by chapter, at least five problems or questions arising from the text. Criteria of grading are based on the originality and quality of the questions. Occasionally, the professor will check on the notebooks.
4.      Examinations: There will be both midterm and final examinations. The coverage of the finals is the materials taken after the midterm. We follow the schedule of examinations set by the Dean’s Office.
